Organic Lettuce

Head type lettuces generally produce a moderate to tight head and are usually grown out to full size to harvest. Sow in succession every 2-3 weeks to extend your season. Head lettuces usually need a longer season and are less tolerant to heat than many leaf types or romaines. Head lettuces are best sown directly as soon as soil can be worked. Sow seeds 0.3 inchs deep in rows 12-16 inches apart in loose and moist soil. Thin to 8-12 inches apart using those pulled for baby greens. Head lettuce grows best in cooler weather and can be of poor quality, bolt, or go dormant in warm weather.
